Their hero and mine is Dr., and I now announce to one and all that as a holistic health advocate this is my favorite book of all time. Not that I have any heart problems, thank goodness, nor does anyone else in my household. But precisely it is not just about healing heart disease but about freeing and empowering ourselves through integral health of body, mind and spirit.

Moreover, while it is important to address carbon vascular disease, which is now the biggest killer, is the US (and Philippine statistics are probably similar because we ape the American lifestyle), the bigger service of the book for most of us is for disease preventation. Heart disease is just one of the many cripplers and killers resulting from out stress urban lifestyle, such as breast, colon, lung and prostate cancer, diabetes, arthritis, and other degenerative diseases.

Now that the relationship between health and lifestyle has been scientifically established, here is a program we can follow and be assured of obtaining the desired results: feeling better enjoying life more, and living longer.

When not out on loan to friends, my copy of Dr. book often found on my kitchen counter. This 600 plus page tome contains 150 doable and delicious recipes that make vegetarianism not only effortless but also enjoyable. It also has the most comprehensive nutrient analysis of common foods that are worth including in our daily fare, given our specific health goals.

May is the month of flowers in all parts of the world. Why? Because this is the time when spring ends and summer begins in temperate countries. And in tropical countries, may is the height of summer, when the flower buds begin to open up and burst into kaleidoscope of colors.

People us flowers to enhance their festivities and other important events. For courtship, roses are universally accepted as an expression of love and admiration. Roses are also the favorite for Valentines Day although nowadays, anthuriums and carnations as well as tulips are becoming popular.

For weddings, white orchids have long been chosen by brides because of their elegance. Other bridal flower are calla lilies, star lilies and of course, roses.

To sympathize and comport the bereaved in the death of their loved ones, friends bring bright colored mums, dahlias and also orchids and anthuruims.

The Hawaiians offer lies of plumeria or frangiffanies to their guests and to honor special people.

In churches, one will find Easter lilies, calla lilies, amaryllis, orchids and anthuruims. These are long lasting. Indians us jasmines and other fragrant blooms in their rituals while Chinese decorate temples and homes with a Peony, Lotus and roses for offerings to their deities to bless them with auspiciousness.

In the Philippines, during Palm Sunday, people make decorate coco palm fronds with flowers to symbolize Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem. They hang these fronds on their doors or windows to prevents the devil or the lightning to destroy their homes

There are words people cannot say readily, perhaps because these are delicate and need subtlety in expression.

In situations like these, people resort to the use of flower language passed on by many generations before ours. Although many kinds of flowers are used in various cultures and traditions, the rose seems to be the most popular since time immemorial.

The number, colors, how they are held, where they are placed, convey messages. For instance, a man giving a lady three red roses say, “I love you”, while three white ones expresses pure intentions. Two red roses with one pink reveal ones timidity or shyness in expressing his love. Three yellow roses say that the man is jealous while a mix of colors hints that he is confused.

If a woman holds a rose or any flower on her left hand, she is accepting mans proposal. When she holds a rose under her lips, she wishes that what she will say be kept a secret (this is where “Sub Rosa” came from). When she kisses the rose, she saying, “I love you too”, and when she holds the stem bottom side-up, the maiden refuses the love being offered. The rose on a woman’s right cheek means she’s waiting and on the opposite – she is not interested; the rose on the right ear – she wants to hear more; on her left – says no more. If she holds the stem close to her heart, she will cherish the suitor; and when she rests the rose stem over her right arm, she is asking the man to wait a little expect anything; over her eyebrow or held against forehead – “ I’ll think about it “.

It is not only through its beauty that people appreciate flowers. Their healing or therapeutic potentials have long been discovered and utilized by shamans, witchdoctors, medicine men, potion makers and herbalists.

Egyptians in their baths to beautify their skin and hair used rose petals with milk and honey. Hawaiians use extracts from plumeria, hibiscus mixed with a coconut oil for their shampoo and hair conditioner.

Europeans during to scent ages made sachets, pomanders, potpourris to scent their laundry and rooms, and to freshen themselves up. The French particularly, developed lilacs, ilang-ilang (would you believe?), and orange blossoms.

Designers have given flowers a great part in women’s (as well as men’s) fashion. Textile designs have captured these beautiful blooms in print, embroidery, latticework, knits, painting, etc. jewellers crafted gold, silver, platinum and other metals into pins, brooches, pendants, rings earrings, bracelets and necklaces shaped like flowers. Some even gold-plated real orchids and roses

Banquets and buffet tables are not the only places one can see decorated with flowers. Even dishes garnished with flowers of fruits and vegetables carved into floral shapes. Gourmets and chefs have included flowers and flower parts as ingredients of appetizers, salads, main dishes, deserts and drinks.

Sampaguita has its antiseptic value. The flowers and leaves can control over secretion of the mammary glands. These can soothe tense or tired nerves through tea decoration.

Boiled santan flower can lower body temperature in fever. Banana flower tea is good for diarrhea and other stomach ailments chrysanthemum tea expels coldness in our body.
